I asked to all the authors joining the GayRomLit convention in Atlanta in October (http://gayromlit.com/grl-authors) a personal favor, a special Ebook Giveaway: everyday I will post 1 book from each author, and among those who will leave a comment, I will draw a winner. Very easy and very fast ;-) I will send a PM to the winner, so remember to not leave anonymous comments!

and the ebook giveaway goes to bokl_c

Today author is Jeff Adams: Thanks to Elisa for allowing me to stop by and talk about Hat Trick.

Hat Trick was conceived during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in November 2006. It was my first time trying to do NaNo and I decided to combine some of my favorite things: hockey, young adult fiction and romance. I had never read a gay YA novel that had hockey players or featured teammates as the featured couple. It seems, even six years later, Hat Trick might still be the first with that combination (and if you know of a book that has these attributes, please let me know as I’d like to read it).

Part of the inspiration for the story came from a trio guys I got to know at hockey practice. For several years I attended an early Saturday morning—some would call it ridiculously early as it would start, depending on the season, anywhere from 4:30 to 6:30. The guys were just out of high school and were clearly good friends. They practiced and played together as much as they could. While they’d rag on each other, there was no doubt they had each other’s backs too.

As I got to know them and watch them interact with each other, I wondered what would happen to that dynamic if one of them came out as gay. Or, beyond that, how the third would react if the other two ended up dating each other. The train of thought continued thinking about how an entire team would react to players within their ranks in a relationship.

Hat Trick follows the romance between Simon and Alex, but also explores the strong friendship with Jackson, whose been Simon’s best friend for as long as either can remember. As you might expect, he becomes the first person that finds out about the budding relationship.

Simon and Alex started out as friends too. Alex transferred to Simon’s high school during their junior year and in short order Simon, Jackson and Alex were friends as well as an on-ice trio making up one of the Central Falcon’s forward lines. As Simon realizes his feelings for Alex are for more than friendship, he’s all too aware that if his feelings are ever revealed he might lose Alex as a friend, and possibly others too. It’s an internal debate he deals with for nearly a year… until Alex let’s Simon know that he’s got feelings for him. Needless to say, Simon is beyond surprised.

Once Simon and Alex are forced out of the closet, they’ll need their friends because Simon’s fears about the reactions aren’t entirely unfounded.

I hope you’ll pick up a copy of Hat Trick and find out how the story unfolds, or give a go at the giveaway and see if you can pick up one for free.

Simon Roberts’ plan for his senior year is simple -- help his high school hockey team win the state championship and earn a college scholarship so he can get away from his dysfunctional family, especially his belligerent father and obnoxious older brother.

When the Central High Falcons open their season with an away game, Simon is forced to deal with the problem he’s struggled with for months -- his crush on teammate Alex Miller. After the game that night, Alex makes an unexpected announcement -- he’s gay, and in love with Simon.

Simon’s elated but scared to openly acknowledge that he’s gay, especially with so much at stake in their senior year. Now that they’re out to each other they have to decide what to do next. Should they date? Should they keep things between them secret? What about the team? Can Simon and Alex hide that they’re more than friends from the guys they spend so much time with?

Then a simple kiss is witnessed and their secret is out. The team fractures, and Simon’s family explodes as news about the gay hockey players quickly spreads. The guys must figure out how to move forward with everyone watching. Being the center of attention was in no way part of Simon’s plan for the year.

Can Simon juggle school, commitments to the team, his new relationship, and an unexpected tragedy all before the end of the hockey season?
