In the Spotlight: Orland Outland

The Book: John has been working out and taking his supplements, and he has a new lease on life. Actually, he has a life, period, since he reversed the downhill slide of his health with an anti-AIDS protease-inhibitor cocktail. Once OK-looking but out-of-shape, he became very sick, but now he is 195 pounds of buffed, chiseled hunk. With the further help of doctor-approved steroids and testosterone, he now has people openly admiring, and beautiful boys propositioning, him. So his stodgy, intellectual, but caring lover, Harrison, increasingly strikes him as, well, lumpy. Then on boys' night out, John meets Brian, hot and 21, and realizes his new studliness has expanded his horizons much wider than he used to think possible. When John reencounters Brian at a gay male resort, and they reexperience their initial passion, John is off and running on his newfound path, which leads to drugs, dissolution, and disappointment. He is not in Kansas anymore, but eventually he sees that there's no place like home--especially if hubby has joined a gym. (Whitney Scott)
