Benjamin Britten (November 22, 1913 - December 4, 1976)

Sir Peter Pears was an English tenor who was knighted in 1978. In 1936, he met Benjamin Britten, while they were both helping to clear out the country cottage of a mutual friend who had died in an air crash. Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten, OM, CH was an English composer, conductor and pianist. He was a central figure of 20th century British classical music, with a range of works including opera, other vocal music, orchestral and chamber pieces. Pears and Britten gave their first recital together in 1937 at Balliol College, Oxford University. Many of Britten's works contain a main tenor role written specifically for Pears. Britten with Pears and the librettist and producer Eric Crozier, founded the annual Aldeburgh Festival in 1948, and he was responsible for the creation of Snape Maltings concert hall in 1967. In his last year, he was the first composer to be given a life peerage. Pears is buried in the churchyard of St Peter and St Paul's Church in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. Benjamin Britten's grave is next to his, near the grave of Imogen Holst, a close friend.
