Rainbow Awards: Cover Contest - Round 12

Round n°12, 3 rounds to the end, 25 covers still in contest to arrive to the last week with the 10 finalists.

You can vote as many covers as you want but please don't vote more than 20 covers otherwise the selection process will not work smoothly.

Other than the poll, there will be a special jury voting in the cover contest. It will be a jury made all by external guests (no authors, no cover artists, no publishers): they will be of course people with an interest in the art and communication field, but they will be impartial. Their vote will be added to the poll, it will have an higher weight but it will be an addition not in substitution, so the people voting in the cover contest will still have an huge influence in the final result.

First to accept my invite is Dylan Rosser, one of the most famous male model photographer out there:

Another judge is Jesse Archer, actor and screenwriter, whose movie "Violet Tendencies" I adopted last year:

Last to join the jury is Jack Mackenroth, athlete and fashion designer, former contendant in Project Runaway:

Last week they voted: 1, 8, 14, 16, 26, 34, 83, 146, 148, 160, 162, 370, 379, 426, 512, 513.

I saved all the covers in an external page, I suggest you to open it in another web page and tick the covers on the poll.

143. Dennis Paddie - Ask the Fire (Lethe Press)
Gay, Contemporary

Ask the Fire blends the high tech culture of modern espionage and the highly politicized social culture of Washington, D.C., the capital of the world, with the secret of the Knights Templar, courtly love and Freemasonry in the architecture of the D.C. streets. Add a dash of 60s hippiedom, and plenty of urban gay and post-gay culture, and readers will discover a new trans-mythological, but deeply spiritual, vision of the meaning of human life in the charged world of the 21st century. “I had a friend who was a spy.” So begins a story of terrorism and espionage, featuring a brilliant, almost enlightened, but emotionally jaded and politically cynical secret agent, a gay Mati Hari who’d seduced secrets out of Arab rulers and now struggles to prevent the start of the Terrorist Wars. It’s a story with a vast sweep that places spying—and spiritual vision— within the larger history of heresy and homosexuality in Western culture from the Crusades to contemporary Islamic fundamentalists.

147. Iolanthe Woulff - She's My Dad (Outskirts Press)
Bisexual / Transgender, Contemporary

"Don't hate, Nicholas. Hate destroys everything. Don't let it destroy you..." For decades, ultra-liberal Windfield College has been a thorn in the side of Northern Virginia's hidebound elite. When a teaching position unexpectedly becomes available, the school hires a former male graduate - now a transsexual woman named Nickie Farrell - as an assistant professor of English. Hoping to find peace, Nickie keeps her secret under wraps until ambitious lesbian student reporter Cinda Vanderhart outs her. And Cinda has noticed something else: both Nickie and a young townie waiter named Collie Skinner have a genetic quirk which causes their eyes to be different colors. Convinced that the similarity is no coincidence, Cinda begins an investigation to discover the connection between them. Meanwhile, in a death-bed confession as she succumbs to years of brutality at the hands of her disgraced cop husband, Collie's mother Luanne reveals that his birth resulted from an illicit affair she had with a long-vanished Windfield college senior named Nick Farrington. Shattered by his mother's death, Collie turns for comfort to Robin Thompson, a gentle-hearted Christian co-worker at the upper-crust Foxton Arms restaurant. As Nickie is stalked by a pair of homicidal sociopaths, Robin finds herself entangled not only in Cinda's investigative machinations but also a murderous plot by former U.S Ambassador and tycoon Eamon Douglass to eradicate the hated college with a suicide detonation of a Cesium 137 dirty bomb. Lives and secrets hang in the balance until everything comes to a head on the morning of Windfield's annual spring picnic: April Fools Day. Filled with richly-drawn characters and building to a stunning climax, SHE'S MY DAD is a story about the destructiveness of hate, the power of love, and the redemptive triumph of good over evil. Like her title character Nickie Farrell, Iolanthe Woulff is a transsexual woman. A sixty-year-old Princeton-educated English major, she lives in Palm Springs, CA, where for several years she wrote a column in a local magazine about the challenges of gender transition. As the eldest child of author Herman Wouk, storytelling has always been dear to Ms. Woulff's heart. Her hope is that besides providing a suspenseful read, SHE'S MY DAD will help to dispel some of the widespread misconceptions about transsexual people.

148. Jane Fletcher - Wolfsbane Winter (Bold Strokes Books)

The Iron Wolf mercenaries who guard travelers on the Misery Trail are notorious for their quick and casual sex lives. Deryn may fit the stereotype better than most, but she has her reasons. A childhood tragedy has left her wary of forming attachments. There she meets Alana, local healer, vet, and woman of mystery. It does not take Deryn long to find out that Alana is more than she seems, and has her own perilous secret to keep. Yet Deryn still finds herself falling for the woman, so much so that her come-and-go lifestyle is at risk. This would be bad enough, but serious trouble arrives for Deryn and Alana in the form of demon magic from the Time of Chaos—revealing that old legends are not merely material for ghost stories around the fire. As the danger increases, who do they need to fear more, the living or the dead?

Lessons in Seduction (Cambridge Fellows Mysteries 6) by Charlie Cochrane

At the sixth book in the Cambridge Fellows Mysteries maybe it’s superfluous to say that I love these two “cute” guys, Jonty and Orlando, so deeply in love with each other and yet still so new to their love; book after book it seems like they can’t get enough of the joy of living together, and it’s not only, or probably not even, a sexual thing; like the author tells us, Jonty and Orlando are now living together, and they are very much like an ordinary couple: they still enjoy the sexual side of their relationship, but their living together is much more, sometime also going to be together maybe to talk and fall asleep in each other arms, just for the joy to be able to.

For this reason, when they need to investigate on the murder of a former mistress of the king, in a exclusive hotel in the country, and Orlando has to go undercover, like an hired dance partner for the ladies, is biggest regret is to not being able to share his everyday (and everynight) rountine with Jonty. And it’s cute to read that on the other hand, his biggest worry is that he will go under the guise of a “gigolo”: yes, since Orlando, in his naivite, matches being a dance partner with being a gigolo, even if no one will ask him to provide more than his services on the dance floor.

In this story Jonty and Orlando are formally separated but I think as never as before they are together: the yearning to be together is so strong, exchanging glances across the room, knowing the one you love is so near and yet so far, gives to both of them, but above all to Jonty, the chance to appreciate even more the fact that they are together. Jonty is in this new adventure with a special companion, his father Richard Stewart, and Mr. Stewart will be a perfect counselor to his son’s questions about love and relationships, giving him a yardstick between his own story with Orlando and the one between his parents.

Another thing that is in common to the books in this series, and that book after book captivates me, is the accurate description of the English society of the beginning of the XX century; it’s a privileged society, a mix between aristocracy and middle-class, a society that could afford to spend time in elegant hotels at easy reach distance, like Kent, Conrwall or maybe on the other side of the sea, in France. It’s a society that is in a changing phase, that will soon disappear, and when I started to read this series, I was worried by something: both Jonty and Orlando are young enough to be involved in the coming I World War conflict, and I so hope they will not. In this book, set in 1907, for the first time we had an hint to the turmoils that are happening in the continent. I don’t want to think what could be of these two men if they had to be separated, a real separation, not a fake one like in this story, but something like a war, for how I read them, I don’t think they will survive to that.

Hot-Blooded by Lizzie Lynn Lee

Hot-Blooded did something that it’s almost impossible to achieve in a 50 pages long novella, it made me change idea three time on the story, like it, don’t like it, like it again.

Adam is a young man in love, he craves Jack, and yes, craves is not too much to define Adam’s feelings for the hot club owner; Adam knows Jack is in a relationship, but nevertheless he is searching any breach in that relationship to infiltrate and making it even bigger. When he hears that Dash, Jack’s lover, is cheating him, Adam is there, ready to console him: he manages to have an hot encounter at the club and they partake with the promise of a surprise for Adam in a week time.

The surprise happens to be not for Adam, but for Dash: Adam will be the gift Jack is doing to Dash for his birthday, Jack and Dash will use Adam as a toy; not it’s not that Adam is complaining, Dash is as much as handsome as Jack, but after the sex what will remain to Adam? He wants Jack in his life permanently, not as a temporary f**k.

I will stop here with the blurb, otherwise you will be too much spoiled, enough to say that I liked at first Adam, I really like his eagerness to conquer Jack, even if Jack is in a long-term relationship, and I usually don’t like a cheating man; true is that apparently Jack was the first to be betrayed, and so he is only behaving as a consequences of what Dash has done to him.

I didn’t like so much the turn into a menages a trois, even if Adam was willing and Dash was handsome, I felt too much cold in the situation, like no one was really caring of what was happening. Adam was indead only an object, both Jack than Dash were using for their own private little game. Even if then Jack will do something to redeem a bit his actions, nevertheless it was a bit too much what he did before that.

Moreover, Jack is also a little too much forceful during sex, his only excuse is probably that Adam like it a bit rough; in a normal situation, if Adam had expressed some complaints, I would have probably not condoned Jack, but in this case it seems that Adam like him like that, or maybe he likes him exactly for that reason: Adam has never known his father, he has always had a penchant for older lover and autorative figure, and Jack fit the bill; Adam is not searching a kind and gentle lover, more Jack is rough, and more Adam loves him.

A very special eye candy

Lea T., the star of Givenchy's autumn/winter ad campaign, recently opened up to several magazines and newspapers about being a transsexual supermodel, even posing nude in French Vogue "in the name of all my transsexual friends". The Guardian UK traced Lea's rise to the top, from her birth as Leandro in 1981 in Belo Horizonte Brazil to soccer hero Toninho Cerezo and a Catholic family to becoming Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy's muse.

Source: Vanity Fair Italy
Lea by Karel Losenicky
client: Vanity Fair Italy
published: June 2010

Riccardo Tisci’s longtime assistant & former fit model; the reticent Lea (formerly Leandro) breaks her silence in an exclusive interview for Italian Vanity Fair. The Brazilian who lived as a child in Italy and went to art school in Florence (hence the perfect Italian) bravely goes on the record about her experiences.

According to the Guardian a Rio gossip column contacted Cerezo and reported, "We got in touch with the former star but, irritated, he limited himself to saying that he had four children, one of them called Leandro...When asked if the boy had starred in the Givenchy campaign, Cerezo hung up the phone." However, Lea's brother Gustavo said, "It's Lea's success, not the family's. All I will say is that we are on her side and we support her."

In the Vanity Fair interview, moreover, [Lea] said she "never spoke directly" to her father about undergoing the hormone treatment that will, eventually, give her the body of a woman. Conversation, she said, was limited to trivialities.

Lea has credited Tisci with her ability to be comfortable with herself. She remembered for French Vogue, "One night [Tisci] encouraged me to wear pumps to a party. We went shopping for 'drag queen' shoes and we bleached my eyebrows. It was a revelation."

ABC News reports that Lea is set to undergo a full sex change from male to female and is currently undergoing hormone replacement therapy. Lea told June's Italian Vanity Fair, "The choice is between being unhappy forever or trying to be happy." (

Lea T lands on the cover of Lurve with a stunning black and white shot by Carlotta Manaigo. The couture dress and marble columns add to the feeling of classical drama, but Lea brings a presence all her own to the shoot. Clad in Givenchy (naturally) and styled by Maher Jridi, Lea looks phenomenal and the striking cover makes for another boundary breaking first. (
