Spinning by Jaime Samms

In a post-apocalypse future there are humans who can live more than 300 years. Only that, for some of them, this is not a good thing, above all when they need the firm hand of a Dom, and no one is old or strong enough to be their Dom.

Kenny is one of those submissive in search of guidance; like a lost puppy, he would be glad to find it in the arms of any stranger but he knows there is one man that will for sure give it to him, Mikko. Mikko was Kenny former lover, but years ago he “left” Kenny for a greater cause, saving the world; apparently he didn’t manage to, and now Kenny is desperate enough to call him. And Mikko maybe is desperate enough (even if he doesn’t let it arrive to Kenny) to answer to that call.

This is not a complex story, and the sci-fi, post-apocalypse setting is barely hinted, more in the words of the characters than for a real background: basically Kenny chose to run away in a forgotten by Gods and not only place where, sincerely, what is happening in the “real” world doesn’t really matter. Sure, the airport are different, the store are stranger, but there Kenny can forget that he is not welcomed in the real world, and there he can lie to himself and believing that he can have an ordinary life with Mikko.

This story has nothing of sexual and everything of emotion; it’s a story with an high impact on the angst level, and it’s also a story of dependency, a dependency that is the only link that Kenny has with his life, I think that if he is not able to find a Dom, someone bounding him to the ground, he will do the final run towards oblivion. Mikko is well aware of that, and he grounds Kenny with very basic things, like that care of the chores, growing things so that Kenny feels responsible, and so on.

The title reminded me of an Italian song, “Fila la lana (Spins the wool)”, it says more or less: “Fila la lana, fila i tuoi sogni, illuditi ancora che lui ritorni, libro di dolci sogni d’amore, chiudi le pagine al suo dolore (Spins the wool, spins your dreams, still thinks he will return, book of sweet, love dreams, closes your pages to her pain)”. This is no different, Kenny is sending messages to the outer world hoping that one of his former lovers will come back to him, and even if Mikko is not the one who Kenny is now mourning, he will be the one to heal his heart.

Behind the Cover: Leo Manso

Leo Manso was an abstract painter and collagist, and he at 78 years old his home in Manhattan. He kept a home also in Provincetown, Mass.

Mr. Manso was widely regarded as a leading influence on the art of collage. Robert Motherwell called him "one of collage's masters." Dedicating an exhibition of Mr. Manso's works in Provincetown in March 1991, Mr. Motherwell said, "Seductively beautiful as the work is at first sight, it holds its own like iron, a visual poetry that never compromises, never loses its inner life."

Mr. Manso's work is known for its fluid composition and rich use of color. It is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Corcoran Gallery and other museums. He held more than 40 one-man shows in galleries in many countries.

The most distinctive artist to work for Pocket Books between 1943 and 1945, Manso had a tremendous impact on the company's look. His version of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon, although not very exciting-three hands reaching for the black bird against an orange background-is one of the rarest and most collectible of all paperbacks.

Mr. Manso, who was born in New York, joined the faculty of the Art Students League in 1976, and continued to teach there until his death. He also taught at Columbia University, New York University and other institutions, and was artist in residence at Dartmouth College in 1985. A Leader of Provincetown Art Scene.

An important force in the development of Provincetown as one of America's leading art colonies of the 1940's, Mr. Manso participated with Hans Hofmann and Jackson Pollock in the "Forum 49" exhibition there and was a co-founder of Gallery 256. In 1958, he and Victor Candell established the Provincetown Workshop, a summer school that attracted students from around the world until it closed, in 1976.

For many years he served on the board of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, championing the work of younger artists. In 1977, he was one of the founders of the Long Point Gallery in Provincetown, along with artists like Mr. Motherwell, Tony Vevers and Paul Resika.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, he is survived by two sons, Peter, of Truro, Mass., and Victor, of Manhattan.

His wife, Blanche, said the cause was heart failure.

When driving snow and high winds force the Wapiti Creek Ski Resort to shut down the lifts, ski patrol Mark wants nothing more than to round up the last stragglers and get safely indoors. Chef Allan is still out in the blizzard on a borrowed snowmobile, delivering meals so a hundred people don't go hungry. While Mark's protective instincts scream to drag his lover inside, he respects Allan's need to honor commitments, even at the risk of frostbite.

Allan's got another problem bigger than the storm. Mark has the solution -- but Allan will never accept it if they don't reach the decision together.

Colin and Martin’s First Christmas by Drew Hunt

This short story is sweet and tender, very romantic and with very little sex, but only since it was not necessary, the amount of good feelings was enough to warm your heart, in perfect agreement with the seasonal romance theme.

Colin is a big and kind man who works as delivery man; a delivery man can know a lot of the people he delivers grocery to, and so Colin knows that Martin, the blind gentle guy will spend Christmas alone. Colin has thought a lot about Martin, who has always a gentle word for him; Colin’s interest is a romantic one, despite Martin is not exactly handsome, on the contrary he has his face scarred by a juvenile illness and he is a bit over weighted; but Colin has learned the hard way that appearance is nothing, his former lover Simon, a very handsome man, was also always ready to cheat on him, something that he is sure Martin would never do.

Sure, I think there is a bit of “comfortable” love here, Colin is probably thinking that Martin will never cheat on him because he has no chance to do that; this is the devil advocate in me speaking, since Colin never once, in all the story, will ever have a bad thought regarding Martin, and Martin is so fragile and hopeful that my heart was all for him. Martin has a lot of love in him he wants to share with someone, and he falls for Colin without even knowing how Colin is or if he is even gay: Martin falls for Colin’s kindness, for the need Martin has of a friend, and if this friend will become also a lover, that is a bonus, but really Martin would be glad enough even if their relationship was only one of friendship.
