Ronda Thompson (1956- July 11, 2007)

The news of Ronda Thompson's death was given from Sue Grimshaw, National Romance Buyer for BGI Corporation, at the RWA Convention on July 12, 2007. Thompson was well known for her books on the Wulfs of London series, also translated into Italian by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore Publisher.

From Tina Gray's blog: "Today I lost a dear friend.

Bestselling author Ronda Thompson (1956- July 11, 2007), after being diagnosed with pancreatic and ovarian cancer only a week ago, died this morning. I met her only six months ago. But we connected immediately. We would email one another every week, meet once a month to have lunch and talk about our families or our current WIPs. She was always so encouraging and upbeat. It didn't take long for her to become one of my best friends.

My heart breaks for her family, grieves for the many fans she leaves behind. Anyone who has read her books knows that she was a master at characterization. But on a personal level, what impressed me most about her was her tenacity and grit. Through her example, she taught me to never give up on my dream of being published.

Ronda had dyslexia, a disability that has been described by some doctors as “word blindness.” Dyslexia can cause a person to see text appearing to jump around on a page, or to not be able to differentiate between letters that have similar shape. Sometimes, the words appear completely backwards (bird can look like drib) or the affected reader might be able to read the words but not make sense or remember what they read, so that they have to read the same passage over and again.

How frustrating to a reader to wrestle with such problems. But for a writer? This would be beyond mere annoyance. Ronda had to work twice as hard as other authors out there, writing and rewriting just to get a sentence on the paper, not to mention proof-reading. To think that she overcame such a debilitating handicap, all to follow a dream. And she kept her charming humor intact throughout.

Next time I catch myself whining about a deadline, or whimpering over a revision, I’m going to remember Ronda. Her struggle over each and every word.

And to think, she went on to be a New York Times and USA Today bestseller. How she must have savored that taste of success — the earning makes it all the more sweet. The reward of all those painstaking hours spent writing resulted in a gift to her readership, and a legacy to her family.

Ronda will be missed. But her stories will live on, and her courage and tenacity will continue to inspire. She won’t be forgotten. All of us who knew and loved her, will see to that.

"He who has gone, so we but cherish his memory, abides with us, more potent, nay, more present than the living man." ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Rough Cut by Vincent Diamond

Usually I don't like anthologies. The simple reason is that I can't be satisfy by too short stories, and when I like the characters is even worst, since I always felt like they are gone too soon. So it's always with a bit of prejudice that I start an anthology, and the reason why I choose to read it is always different, but usually since there is at least an author in the anthology that I like.

Rough Cut is different so. First of all it's a collection of stories from the same author, Vincent Diamond, ones I had the chance to read and like, especially in the Under Arrest Anthology. One reason more is that, the very story I like in that anthology, was also in this collection and it has also a sequel, so even better, since one of my prejudice falls as I have the chance to read more on two characters I liked very much and way better since the story I read in the past didn't have an happily ever after and I'm a looser for HEA. And finally the big surprise, almost all the stories in the anthology are related one to each other and tell us about the same pair, an ex cops and his bad boy lover, and so it's almost like having a full novel, plus some nice appetizers and desserts.

"Lions and Tigers and Snares" & "Cold Hands, Warm Heart" : Byron is an agent who has to discover an illicit traffic with dying big felines. So he works undercover in a shelter, playing the role of volunteer and looking around. But more than looking to illicit traffic, he is looking at Kendall, the man who leads the shelter and that probably is head to foot involved. But Byron sees how Kendall loves the big cats and he is sure the man can't be the ones who sells them to certain death.

"A Cold Night's Sleep" & "Fire": Sandy is a retired cop. He had a very bad experience during a fire and he still blames himself for the death of a little child. Plus he is scarred by the fire, inside and outside. He prefers to live alone in a cabin with a cat and no one to care who can leave him like his former lover did. Tanner is an ex con who arrives to the cabin during a storm and Sandy offers him a shelter to the bad weather. Also Tanner has his scars, they are only inside, but they are not less painful. And from a scarred man to another, Tanner can see beyond Sandy claims to want to be alone. But probably Tanner needs to set something in his life and it's not time for him to stop with Sandy. And Sandy is not yet ready to forget and move one. Maybe not now, maybe not ever.

"A Cold Night's Sleep" is the short story I remember. In "Fire" Vincent Diamond tells us something more on these two guys, and maybe the romance I thought ended in the first story, cab have a "better" end in this second chapter.

"Haunted", "Slide into Desire", "Walking the Blue Line", "Deep Trouble Undercover", "A Question of Taste", "Dangerous Days" & "Tropical Daze": all these stories are about Steven and Conrad. Steven is a undercover cop, he is searching proofs of a drug dealing during the rave parties. Conrad is the man who organizes the raves. It should be a simple mission, not a very dangerous one, they are dealing mostly with young kids, college animals... But Steven cares too much, since he falls in love with Conrad. Conrad is an half spanish half cuban guy, sexy and smooth talking; he lures Steven inside his world and in his bed. Steven is new to all this, he can't even imagine to fall in love with a man, but here he is and in love. But Conrad? it's only sex? and then there is the little problem that Steven should do his work and his work probably will lead Conrad in prison.

I don't want to spoil the story, since probably I will ruin to you the big surprise it revealed me. Reading "Haunted" I almost believed that this one was one of that wonderful but sad story, with two star-crossed lovers condemn to be forever torn apart and instead... read and you will know!

Sheperd: Felipe is a good guy who ends in prison. He is not gay, but two years in captivity could change a man. This is not a love story, maybe it's more a life journey, the surviving tale of a man who sees his world collapse and needs to refocuses his priority and beliefs.

"Bruised", "Back in the Saddle" & "Horsing Around": another pretty long and so very satisfying story. Marcus is a man who has loved and lost. He is still mourning but maybe he is ready to be back in the saddle. David is a vet student who helps Marcus in his horse farm during summer. He is young and innocent and so tempting. He sees and wants Marcus and with his joy of life forces Marcus to live again, to want again, to want David. But David is soo young, and new to real love, plus Marcus is his first man, before him David never thought possible for him to love a man. Family and future seem big handicaps in their ride to life.

What links all the stories? they are sweet and sexy, but a bit sad. Even when there is an happily ever after, and lucky for me, there is often, I always felt like a suffused sadness. Erotic stories sometimes are like a roaring fire, these instead are like simmering ashes, and maybe it is better, since a roaring fire blasts and ends in a blur, and instead the ashes last longer. So these stories, they spread inside you like a comforting warm, and remain with you long before you close the book.

Pittsburgh has recently (and more than once) been called the most livable city in America, yet the old image of smoky skies and steel mills spewing forth grit has never quite disappeared. Its history as a dirty industrial center is a part of its residents, a part of their toughness. The people of the steel city fight.

Greetings from Provincetown, Massachusetts

With summer people need to "escape", and so I will introduce a new weekly appointment, a little "card" from some of the best LGBT location around the world; I hope this will inspire my friends, both to go then to choose it as a possible "setting". Of course, my first choice is Provincetown, Massachussetts

Provincetown is a New England town located at the extreme tip of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 3,431 at the 2000 census, with an estimated 2007 population of 3,174. Sometimes called "P-town", the town is known for its beaches, harbor, artists, tourist industry, and its status as a gay village.

The area was originally settled by the Nauset tribe, who had a settlement known as Meeshawn. Provincetown was incorporated by English settlers in 1727 after harboring ships for more than a century. Bartholomew Gosnold named Cape Cod in Provincetown Harbor in 1602. In 1620, the Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact when they arrived at the harbor. They agreed to settle and build a self-governing community, and then came ashore in the West End. Though the Pilgrims chose to settle across the bay in Plymouth, Provincetown enjoyed an early reputation for its fishing grounds. The "Province Lands" were first formally recognized by the union of Plymouth colony and Massachusetts Bay colony in 1692, and its first municipal government was established in 1714. The population of Provincetown remained small through most of the 18th century.

Deviations: Domination by Chris Owen & Jodi Payne

As many told me, the second books in the Deviations series tends to be a little more “public” than the previous one, but that is not necessarily a bad point. True, I don’t like very much public sex scene, but the ones in Deviations: Domination are tempered by the fact that they are, in a way, a commitment: allowing Tobias to stake his claims on Noah in front of their friend is a way for Tobias to fully commit to Noah and for Noah to fully acknowledge his relationship with Tobias. If I remember well, Noah was “scarred” by a bad experience with his previous Dominant, bad not since he didn’t love the man (that is still his friend) but since he couldn’t completely trust him with his safety. So allowing to Tobias to be so clearly in power is at the same time admitting that he trusts Tobias; trusting to Noah doesn’t come easily, not only for his past experiences, but also since, as a cop, he has to be really careful.

For Tobias, committing so fully to Noah, is also a way of healing from his past; again the previous partner, Phan, is part of the story, and his relationship with Tobias is still on, only moved to a friendship stage. Tobias doesn’t hate Phan, on the contrary, I have the feeling that he is still in love with him, but now, in book 2, Tobias realizes his future is with Noah. Taking their relationship in front of people is like taking vows, a some sort of marriage, a proof that Tobias is over Phan and ready to fully love Noah; and so of course, worthy of the trust Noah wants to give him.

I’m true, as always, BDSM is not my cup of tea, and more it’s intense, more I’m not so comfortable. But as I told to a friend, about the previous book, I can understand the concept behind, and I fully understand that, to some point of view, BDSM is really romantic: it’s giving yourself completely to someone else, trusting that he will want only the better for you, that his love is so strong that your own good is the most important thing… if that is not unconditional love, I don’t know what else could be.
