Best Gay Contemporary Romance (1° place): More by Sloan Parker

More is a new intake on the ménages a trois story. The previous versions I have seen were about a couple that, for a reason or the other, opened to a third man; in this way the need to balance was between old habits and the new element, the new man. The previous couple would react in a good or bad way, but in any case they had their past experience together to help them. Here instead all three men are new to this experience, and all of them have their baggage of issues.

Luke is the one who is telling the story, and the mainstay around which all the story turn: around 30 years old, he is the disowned son of a conservative politician who doesn’t like his son’s lifestyle; thank to his power, the father managed to ruin his son’s life till now, and Luke fears any type of commitment, he resorts to anonymous sex to avoid any trouble. But one night he meets the perfect pair, two men who fulfil any and each of his desires and letting them go is not easy.

Richard is more 40 than 30 years old, and he is just coming out from a long lasting relationship ended badly; he is not used to play the field no more, and sincerely, he doesn’t want to. He is all for commitment as soon as possible, and where he is for sure a steady and balanced man, maybe he is pushing a bit too fast Luke in doing something he is not ready to do. And even if he is good to the man, nevertheless Richard has a strong and stubborn personality, which will give him a lot of work to match with Luke, the one in the ménages a trois that is more near to him for experience and age.

Matthew is a 22 years old guy, working small jobs since he left college before his graduation; he has apparently a good life, but he is obviously searching in the private club where he meets Richard and Luke, for the happily ever after he so desperately want; he feels sure inside the private club, but he is like a man picking a taste of each flavour to decide what it suits him better. Matthew is young and enthusiast, but he is also easily to get hurt. A bad past experience left him with some self-esteem issues, but he is basically a good boy, and he likes his life simple and ordinary, if in the routine there is a lot of sex.

As you will understand these three men are as different as they could be and only one thing link them, they all have bad experiences behind the shoulders, but they didn’t loose the hope for an happily ever after, even if, like Luke, they are not willing to admit it. Their relationship starts from the sex, and there is a lot of it, to develop in something more; the sex helps to accelerate things, so maybe someone will wonder on the balance they will reach, I think it will need some adjustments, but there is good chance of success.

This was my first experience with Sloan Parker, and it was a good one; I usually don’t like too much ménages, it’s difficult to build them for me to believe in their lasting, but in this case, right since the author chose a different approach, I think it made sense: it’s not the case of a third wheel which ruined a perfect balance, it’s more like a puzzle at its beginning, with all still to build in front.

Amazon Kindle: Diary of a Sex Addict

Witty, dark and explosively carnal, Diary of a Sex Addict chronicles a gay New Yorker’s month-long descent into a circus of anonymous hook-ups as he struggles to erase the pain of a failed romance and blot out the routine of a soul-numbing day job. Bizarre gang-bangs and fleeting attempts at celibacy are interspersed with visits to his wealthy and eccentric dowager aunt, visits which awaken lost memories of a chaotic youth. Written in prose that is at once poetic and unabashedly lewd, Diary offers a glimpse into a forbidden fringe world of longing and debauchery that ultimately reveals the narrator’s fervent search for something to fill a profound emptiness. Inspired by the transgressive works of the Marquis de Sade, Dennis Cooper and Bret Easton Ellis, Diary of a Sex Addict blends wry humor, elegant language and graphic sex to offer a novel that is “relentlessly erotic and divinely written” (Richard Labonte, Bookmarks).

When Neal Tate, a just-out-of-rehab NYC party columnist, falls for Dewalt, a Harlem drug dealer he meets at a gay bathhouse, he discovers that navigating an honest relationship is a lot more difficult than chasing down the perfect pair of skinny jeans. Neal finds support from his fashion-loving friends: Rovvy, a blond boy-toy married to Andres Palamos, the shady millionaire owner of Pop magazine where Neal works; Nick, “It-boy” style writer for the New York Times whose fab job and rich hubby are smothering his desires to design; and Annie, straight-girl art director at Pop who gives Neal’s life a smidge of balance. The success of Neal’s "Bergdorf Boy" column and his growing love for Dewalt lead him to question his capacity for intimacy and his obsessive commitment to both the latest trend and anonymous sex, and to wonder if a monogamous gay marriage could be in the cards. Born in 1829 to a working-class family in upstate New York, Lucy Ann Lobdell was not your average girl. Donning her brother's clothes, she worked on the farm and in her father's saw mill, and demonstrated marksmanship skills that earned her the nickname "The Female Hunter of Delaware County." After leaving home, she moved to the frontier, married a woman, and lived for sixty years as a man named "Joe." Because of nineteenth century social restrictions and gender expectations, Lobdell endured forced marriage, arrest, and incarceration in an insane asylum. Although twentieth-century scholars have labeled her a lesbian, this study incorporates queer theory, analysis of stories about Lucy and Joe, and Lobdell's own writings to reveal that he was actually a transgendered man.

A Fool for You by Cat Grant

At the third book in the series, the author decided to label this one the “Icon Men” series. I thought about this “icon” tag, and my conclusion is that these stories are centred around characters out of the dreams, sexy and not, of many men, but then in the end, they are more down to earth than what you were expecting. In the first story there was the sexy escort, in the second one the drag queen, and now the pop/rock/blues star; the common theme is an immediate attraction to the “icon”, the dreamlike imagine we have of the man, but then the lover will understand the man is just like everyone else, with his goods and bads.

Brian is really only a kid at the beginning of the story, he is already 20 years old, but he is practically living alone since he was 15, dragged from place to place by his boyfriend with whom he has a rock band. When the cheating boyfriend finds someone else from whom he can dig, Brian finds himself in need of help and shelter and he finds them in the arms of Chase, a blues guitar player, and in the welcoming family his father Trent built with partner Cameron.

There is really no bump in this story, if not, as I said, the need for Brian to grow a little and learning that the world is not Black and White and that it’s good sense to give people a second chance. Brian is really a spoiled brat at first, both with Trent and Cameron, but also with Chase. In a way he is expecting the world to love him since he had a “difficult” youth, not realizing that, in the end, he got it way simplier than many other kids.
