Call for Submissions: He Loves Me for My Brainsss

Zombie stories are hot right now... and here at Torquere Press we think they could be even hotter! Get your delicious brains churning, and give us your unique, zombie-themed love stories! Is your hero a zombie-slayer -- or is he in love with one? Maybe your hero is desperately searching for a cure to save an infected loved one. Maybe he's the one making the zombies in the first place. Maybe he's even a zombie himself!

These are the stories we want to showcase in "He Loves Me for My Brainsss", a new anthology of sexy, romantic m/m stories about men finding love in the face of a zombie crisis. All settings and heat ratings are welcome, but we're looking for strong characters in fully realized, happy-ending stories with a little more zing to them than the "survivors meet and fall in love" stock standard. Note: While it is true that the undead can be sexy, and it is also true that part of the fun of zombies is their gross-out factor, we ask that you avoid combining these two elements directly, in order to appeal to the widest possible audience.

Any word count from 5000 words and up is welcome, no stories shorter than the minimum please. Stories should be sent to submission@torquerepress.com with Brainsss Anthology in the subject line. Deadline for submission is October 1, 2012 for a projected January 2013 publication. Stories will be contracted for first time print and electronic rights, and payment will be 50.00 US plus contributor copies. Please see our general submission guidelines for how to format your submission.

To get to “Love Me Tender”, they’ll have to shake things up.

Kevin Fraser has a good life—a good job, good friends and a nursing degree within his grasp. There’s not a lot of excitement to be found in Asheville, but so what? He doesn’t need excitement. Or love, for that matter. Until a big man with an Elvis fixation and the voice to match shows up in his ER and changes his point of view.

A diabetes diagnosis isn’t the end of the world, just one more problem Owen Hicks doesn’t need. It hasn’t been easy finding his place in the Cherokee tribe, his family and the world at large since he came out. On top of that, learning to manage the disease that killed his mother is a daunting challenge. He counts himself lucky that the nursing student he befriended in the hospital is willing and able to help.

As their fast friendship deepens into something both of them want—yet fear—pressures from without and within stretch their bond to the breaking point. The only way to find the strength to love each other is to find the courage to let go…and hope love is strong enough to bring them together again.

In the Spotlight: Myrlin A. Hermes

The Book: A Divinity scholar at Wittenberg University, Horatio prides himself on his ability to argue both sides of any intellectual debate but is himself a skeptic, never fully believing in any philosophy. That is, until he meets the outrageous, provocative, and flamboyantly beautiful Prince of Denmark, who teaches him more about both Earth and Heaven than any of his books. But Hamlet is also irrationally haunted by intimations of a tragic destiny he believes is preordained.

When a freelance translation job turns into a full-scale theatrical production, Horatio arranges for the theater-loving prince to act in the play-disguised as the heroine! This attracts the attention of Horatio′s patroness, the dark and manipulative Lady Adriana. A voracious and astute reader of both books and people, she performs her own seductions to test whether the "platonic true-love" described in his poems is truly so platonic. But when a mysterious rival poet calling himself "Will Shake-speare" begins to court both Prince Hamlet and his Dark Lady, Horatio is forced to choose between his skepticism and his love.

Laced with quotes, references, and in-jokes, cross-dressing, bed-tricks, mistaken identity, and a bisexual love-triangle inspired by Shakespeare′s own sonnets, this novel upends everything you thought you knew about Hamlet. Witty, insightful, playful, and truly wise about the greatest works of the Bard, THE LUNATIC, THE LOVER, AND THE POET is a delectable treat for people that have loved books like Stephen Greenblatt′s WILL IN THE WORLD and John Updike′s GERTRUDE AND CLAUDIUS.

Treasure of Love by Scotty Cade

This was more romance and less adventure than expected. I’m true, I like romance but I’m not really the adventurous novel type; I usually skip really quick through all the crash-boom-bang scenes to arrive to the one where the two main characters are alone, dealing with each other and their feelings. When I read the blurb of this story, the relationship between Captain Jack and treasure hunter Dax, I had the preconception that these two alpha men were too stubborn and strong to give me a sweet romance… I was wrong.

Sure Jack and Dax clash at first encounter, but then Dax decides to play the romance ace instead of being stubborn; he unexpectedly kisses Jack and from that moment on, he remains open to Jack’s attempts, without pushing too much, but leaving the other knows he is interested. Dax is openly gay, when instead Jack has never once considered himself bi-curious. Jack is not closeted case, unless you don’t consider self-conscious behaviour. He is not homophobic, even if he was not so accepting of Mac and Brad’s love story, mostly since Mac was his former brother-in-law and I think Jack felt like Mac was betraying his sister, and Mac’s wife, memory. His sister was dead, but having her husband falls in love for another man was not easy to accept.

Once Jack overcomes his reticence on regard to Mac and Brad’s relationship, he was also able to see they were happy; and that a love story between men was not only possible but also fulfilling. And so when he is giving the chance with Dax, he is more ready to consider the possibility than before.

As I said, this is mostly Dax and Jack’s love story; the adventure side of the novel is there, but it’s not really intruding their relationship, and actually it develops quickly, and quickly ends, almost all in the last chapters. I have to say I prefer the novel like this, I enjoyed a lot Dax and Jack’s love dance, and I think Dax adopted the right strategy to conquer skittish Jack.
