Gordon Hoban (August 4, 1941 - April 10, 1993)

Gordon Hoban (born August 4, 1941, Faribault MN, USA, died of AIDS on April 10, 1993, Kakuihaele, Hawaii) was an American writer, a dramatist who wrote porno and S&M works. His books include "Adventures of a High School Hunk," 1990, "The Marine Olaf," 1990, and "Runaway."

Gordon Hoban was an actor in the Mark Taper Forum's Los Angeles production of A Meeting by the River, written by Christopher Isherwood and Don Bacardy when he first thought of becoming a writer himself. He credits Isherwood's example as his impetus. Hoban moved into scriptwriting first, authoring a couple episodes of the television hit "The Paper Chase" and working later on Twentieth Century Fox development projects for the movies. On the sly he was writing pornography as Tom Hardy. As he saw his script work being more and more dictated by committee, he realized that the porn was the source of his greatest satisfaction and that much of that satisfaction
came from his ability to control the writing.

He escaped to an isolated valley in Hawaii where he lived for the first several years under a tarp and walked for miles to a pay phone with a pocket full of change whenever he wanted to contact the rest of the world. The sacrifice enabled him to start Omnium Publishing, with which he's published his stage plays, as well as his erotic novels.

His story collections and novels were privately republished. "Runaway" is the best collection, "The Marine Olaf" probably the best novel. At his best, his work was definitely literature, not just stroke fiction.

In a trendy San Francisco art gallery, out-of-towner Vin Vanbly witnesses an act of compassion that compels him to make Perry Mangin a mysterious offer: in exchange for a weekend of complete submission, Vin will restore Perry's "kingship" and transform him into the man he was always meant to be. Despite intense reservations, Perry agrees, setting in motion a chain of events that will test the limits of his body, seduce his senses, and fray his every nerve, (perhaps occasionally breaking the law) while Vin guides him toward his destiny as "the one true king." Even as Perry rediscovers old grief and new joys within himself, Vin and his shadowy motivations remain enigmas: who is this offbeat stranger guiding them from danger to hilarity to danger? To emerge triumphant, Perry must overcome the greatest challenge alone: embracing his devastating past. But can he succeed by Sunday's sunrise deadline? How can he possibly evolve from an ordinary investment banker into King Perry?

Dangerous Obsessions by Blake Deveraux

This is not an easy book for me; truth be told I had to start it two times before being able to finish it, mainly since I had to find the courage to go over the first chapters, about a young man and his downfall towards Inferno.

When Daniel meets Brandon, the scene seems pretty much an ordinary romance; Daniel is a former Marine, with apparently a big heart, big enough to welcome and love damaged Brandon; Brandon is like a Fallen Angel, beautiful like an angel but with a dark past haunting him like all the fallens. The meeting of these two should be Brandon’s ticket to happiness, but instead the young man is not able to accept Daniel’s love. He puts himself into situations that are reasons for Daniel to cast him away, but instead Daniel is always ready to forgive and accept Brandon for who he is, more than Brandon is able to accept himself.

At first I thought the damaged one was only Brandon, but then we found that also Daniel has reasons to regret his past and maybe some sins he wants to expiate; maybe helping and loving Brandon is also a way to expiate those sins.

There is a lot of sex in Dangerous Obsessions, not always consensual sex and not always between Daniel and Brandon; for these two to become an exclusive couple the path is long, and probably not even the length of the novel will be enough. I had the feeling that both of them are arriving from experience where the sex, more than an intimate experience, was almost a bartering good, something you use to reach or buy something else. There are few times, when they are together, that I can see between them can be different, but as I said, the journey is long and full of obstacles.

I’m not sure I’m totally comfortable with recommending this novel to all the readers without warning. It can be an intense read, but you have to be prepared. And if you are more the romantic type, the one who wants to see everything through a pink glasses perspective, then maybe this is a little too strong for you.

North’s Complications (Lost Shifters 18) By Stephani Hecht

It’s always with a little worry that I read a book so far into a series when I haven’t read all the previous installments, but North’s Complications is a nice and quick novella with a very good point on its favor.

First of all I enjoyed the strange contrast to have an usually dominant character, a tiger shifter, playing the role of the twink and submissive lover (even if submissive is maybe a strong term, I would use bottom is you are able to attach to this other word the “playful” meaning I want to convey). Dominic is not a weak man, but he is young and he has all the joy of life of a young gay man living fully his youth. On the other hand, North, his mate, is a shapeshifter fox, of Japanese origins, and he is as detached as these two elements let you imagine; but with Dominic he is not able to maintain the aloof attitude, and in the end, he will surrender to Dominic’s playfulness.

The strong point I was saying above is that, at one point, Dominic is in a bad situation, needing someone near him 24/7, but at the same time there is the villain, the one who put Dominic in that bad situation, to hunt down. Sincerely, most of the time, the hero of the day will leave the side of his beloved one, with the justification that he has to do what is right, that he has to avenge his beloved one… here instead North prefers to let others do the hero job and remains near Dominic. I really, really liked this point, there was really no need to prove to the reader he is an hero, for me he has won all the needed points remaining with Dominic and loving him unconditionally.
