211) Philip D. Luing - From Particles and Disputations
Publisher: BookBaby; 1 edition (February 14, 2012)
Amazon Kindle: From Particles and Disputations: Writings for Jeff. A Book of Hours
"From Particles and Disputations" is a collection of playful, romantic, candid and personal creative writings that I wrote for my partner Jeff. From our meeting in 1982 until his death from AIDS in 1994 I marked each birthday, anniversary, holiday, and other special or difficult occasion we shared with a candid piece of writing – sometimes poetry, sometimes prose, sometimes celebratory, sometimes anguished – chronicling and reflecting upon the event. These were intimate writings composed solely for the purpose of expressing myself to one other person. Following Jeff's death I collected these writings into a “book of hours” which I entitled "From Particles and Disputations: Writings for Jeff." Read together they impart our story, a love story with a sad but transcendent ending. Read in a larger context, I believe these writings have something important to add to a much needed conversation in our society about what constitutes morality. I believe we live moral lives by establishing, protecting, and enriching the trustworthiness of our relationships with ourselves, our sense of deity, and the world in which we live. For most of us, the first and foremost ripple of our morality finds its expression is in our relationship with a mate. The trust we give to another individual to share and protect our person and our property, those most basic aspects of our being, is what renders these relationships sacred.

Apparently, my twin and I are two of York's most notorious criminals. We've been Nightwalkers in the blue-light district since the vamps took over the world. Don't know how many years it's been. Long enough that a stream of fellow 'walkers have come and gone. Most don't last long selling their chi. End up face-down in the gutter, or worse. For us, one night and one sale change everything. Monsieur Garthelle is the first john to hunt me down. He calls me a chi thief in one breath and offers absolution--servitude--in the next. Maybe I'm a sucker, but I like living and breathing. Strange that such a powerful vamp would show leniency to a mere human. And something's not right with the chi I took from him. It won't go away. Neither will he, and he’s forcing us to spy on his peers. Then a vamp turns up dead, and we go from playing eyes and ears to investigating a murder. This isn't what I signed up for. All I ever wanted was to sell a little chi, maybe steal some in return. I should've kept my damn hands to myself. This is my story. Look through my eyes.

Amazon Kindle: The Starving Years
Imagine a world without hunger. In 1960, a superfood was invented that made starvation a thing of the past. Manna, the cheaply manufactured staple food, is now as ubiquitous as salt in the world's cupboards, pantries and larders. Nelson Oliver knows plenty about manna. He's a food scientist--according to his diploma, that is. Lately, he's been running the register at the local video rental dive to scrape together the cash for his exorbitantly priced migraine medication. In a job fair gone bad, Nelson hooks up with copywriter Javier and his computer-geek pal Tim, who whisks them away from the worst of the fiasco in his repurposed moving truck. At least, Nelson thinks those two are acquainted, but they're acting so evasive about it, he's not sure how they know each other, exactly. Javier is impervious to Nelson's flirting, and Tim's name could appear in the dictionary under the entry for "awkward." And with a riot raging through Manhattan and yet another headache coming on, it doesn't seem like Nelson will get an answer anytime soon. One thing's for sure, the tension between the three of them is thick enough to cut with a knife...even one of those dull plastic dealies that come in the package with Mannariffic EZ-Mealz.
