Walter Pater (August 4, 1839 – July 30, 1894)

Walter Horatio Pater was renowned for his biographical essays about LEONARDO, BOTTICELLI, MICHELANGELO, and other Renaissance figures. His works and ideas influenced Oscar WILDE and many other writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Along with writer Edward CARPENTER, Pater espoused the concept of "Greek Love" that provided fhe basis for the queer culture of the time.

Pater entered Queen’s College, Oxford, in 1858, where he studied classics and became associated with Matthew Arnold’s renouncement of religion for cultural studies.

At Oxford, Pater had a love affair with fellow student Ingram Bywater (1840-1914). Pater also had intimate relationships with the painters Simeon SOLOMON and Algemon SWINBURNE in the late 1860s and early 1870s. Pater faced expulsion when indiscreet letters came to the attention of the Oxford authorities, and he was forced to withdraw his application for the poetry professorship vacated by Arnold in 1877.

Pater dedicated his masterpiece, Studies in the History of the Renaissance, to Charles Lancelot Shadwell, who was likely his lover.

The aesthetic of the important and influential Victorian critic Walter Pater reflected a homosexual sensibility.

Among British prose writers of the Victorian era, Pater stands as the embodiment of stylistic elegance. His critical essays--ranging widely over Classical, Renaissance, Romantic, and contemporary artists and writers--are themselves literary works of the first order. William Butler Yeats called Pater's novel Marius the Epicurean (1885, rev. 1892) "the only great prose in modern English."

Grant’s Mechanic (Blue Collar Lovers) by Nicole Dennis

Apparently a light erotic romance, there were at time when this novel went a little beyond. The character of Morric had a darkness in him that made this man more complex than the simply eye candy blue collar lover that attracted Grant’s attention.

Grant is a self-made millionaire who is enjoying is early almost retirement; a computer wizard, sometime he still behaves like a spoiled teenager who is playing with big toys, like muscle cars and co. He is not a bad boy, only a little self-centered. So self-centered that, even if he says that he cares a lot for Marty, and I didn’t find any reason to not believe him, he let pass months before coming to visit, so long that he doesn’t know Marty hired a new mechanic, Morric, and that Marty is terminal ill.

That was the first hint the author decided to make this story less light than first impression; the second is Morric and his stubbornly decision to not let Grant have it easy with him. Morric is not the last toy Grant will use and toss away, if he wants to play, they will do it together. I quite enjoyed Morric, he is round and square, able to understand his issues and trying to overcome them. So much that sometime I found Grant to be too immature for someone like Morric; but the positive side of Grant is that, like a stubborn puppy who wants to share his love, he ignores Morric’s attempts to push him away and is always coming back for more.

Whisper (Book One) by L.E. Harner

A quickie, an hot dream about a forbidden fantasy unveiling to being even more forbidden than expected. Like in that old television fiction where people are gathering in an enchanted island where they dream will become true, here the host is played by Native American Tavish Black and the dreams he makes true are sexual fantasies. Mitch came to Tavish expecting his forbidden desire of a ménages a trois to come true, what he is not expecting is for his twin brother to be part of it. Even if, what Mitch declared wasn’t really his true desire and Tavish knew it.

This is a quick read, just a night in the life of the men involved in each fantasy, so you haven’t to expect full development, or characters’s life turning events. Nevertheless, the author gave a little of background to them and an hint of a possible future development. Other than that, this is simply to enjoy an hot, short story, to be savored when in the mood and quickly consumed.
