Alfred Jarry (September 8, 1873 – November 1, 1907)

A precursor of surrealism and credited with having invented the Theater of the Absurd, Alfred-Henry Jarry included homosexual characters and themes in most of his works.

Jarry was born in Laval (Brittany) on September 8, 1873. His mother, an eccentric, headstrong woman who strongly influenced her son, left her husband when Jarry was six, taking her children with her and moving first to Saint-Brieuc (1879) and then to Rennes (1888). Images and material from Jarry's Breton childhood would later appear throughout his work.

He moved to Paris in 1891 to attend Lycée Henri IV and began publishing in 1893, when two of his works were awarded prizes. His success gained him entrance the following year to the group of writers affiliated with the newly founded Mercure de France.

From 1893 to 1895, he enjoyed a brief but intense relationship with his reputed literary collaborator, the future poet Léon-Paul Fargue, a fellow student at Henri IV. Though Jarry jested often about his homosexuality, this is his only known relationship, and it provided the material for his semiautobiographical play, Haldernablou (1894).

Jarry, at twenty-three, reached the height of his literary fame in December 1896, when the premier of Ubu roi (King Ubu) at Lugné-Poe's Théâtre de l'Oeuvre caused a riot with its opening word, merdre (loosely translated as "shee-it"). The play closed after the second performance.

Jarry continued to write over the next eleven years, but he gained little or no recognition. A heavy drinker given to eccentric extremes of behavior, he died on November 1, 1907, at the age of thirty-four.

Dan Erkkila (March 18, 1941 - November 1, 1992)

Dan Erkkila (March 18, 1941, Cloquet, Minnesota - November 1, 1992, New York), noted composer and flautist, worked in theatre in New York for twenty years and was a leading member of the world music community. A virtuoso on classical flute, he was also a master on shakuhachi, Asian flutes, and a host of other unusual wind instruments such as the Tibetan thighbone trumpet. He attributed his distinctive understanding of world music to his early childhood training by Japanese-American musicians and entertainers in the detention camp his father oversaw during World War II.

Erkkila attended Yankton College in South Dakota and served in the U.S. Navy in the early 1960s. In 1962 he moved to San Francisco where he played flute with West Coast orchestras and chamber groups including the Contemporary Woodwind Quintet, Renaissance Trio, and San Francisco Street Trio; recorded with two folk rock groups, Sunshine and Lamb; and performed at such clubs as The Coffee Gallery, The Drinking Gourd, Avalon Ballroom, The Fillmore West, and The Family Dog. He created scores for San Francisco Dance Spectrum and Xoregos Dance Company, and for productions of Edward Albee's The Sandbox, Jean Anouilh's Thieves' Carnival, and a production of A Thurber Carnival.

Erkkila also appeared as an actor at the San Francisco Playhouse, The Interplayers, and the International Repertory Theater, and performed the role of The Mute in the San Francisco production of The Fantasticks. Between 1967 and 1970 he studied classical flute with Paul Renzi, Merrill Jordan, and Alain Marion. He left San Francisco in 1970 to work in New York.

George Zoritch (June 6, 1917 – November 1, 2009)

George Zoritch (June 6, 1917 – November 1, 2009) an international star in the rival Ballet Russe companies who stood out for his matinee-idol looks and bold stage presence and who later became one of American ballet's respected teachers, died in Tucson, where he lived, on November 1, 2009. He was 92. (Picture: George Zoritch by Carl Van Vechten, 1942)

The acclaimed 2005 documentary "Ballets Russes" offered filmgoers here and abroad a taste of Mr. Zoritch's vivid personality. At one point in the film he and the ballerina Nathalie Krassovska, both in their 80s, relived their past partnership in a segment from "Giselle," punctuating their mime with spicy comments.

In his memoir, "Ballet Mystique" (2000), Mr. Zoritch readily recognized that he was not a bravura technician. He felt that artistry was more important than technique for dancers like him, who joined the Russian migr troupes that succeeded Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in the 1930s. Often they used variations on that company's name.

"What made the Ballet Russe so successful was that it was composed of half-starved ballet-craving dancers who gave everything from their inner souls," he told The Los Angeles Times in 2007.

Mr. Zoritch opened a ballet school in West Hollywood in 1964, two years after the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, in which he was the mainstay, was dissolved. He taught at the University of Arizona in Tucson from 1973 to 1987 and more recently served on the jury at the Perm ballet competitions in Russia.

Jon-Henri Damski (March 31, 1937 – November 1, 1997)

Jon-Henri Damski (March 31, 1937 – November 1, 1997) was an American essayist, weekly columnist, poet and community activist in Chicago's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered communities from the mid to late 1970s until the late 1990s. At the time of his death, Damski was the longest-running columnist published in the American gay and lesbian press, having written for publication every week from November 8, 1977 until November 12, 1997.

Damski is also considered the first gay columnist in the American Midwest to publish under his real name and photo, starting in January, 1979, when no legal protections existed in the city of Chicago to give one recourse if fired from a job, or forced from housing, due to sexual orientation. Damski's epigrams, columns and poetry have been gathered in several collections and anthologies (see "Damski and Firetrap" section, below).

Jon-Henri Damski was considered one of the people most instrumental in helping to pass Chicago's Human Rights Ordinance in 1988, which granted protections in jobs and housing to members of the gay and lesbian communities within the city. In this campaign, Damski worked closely with activists Arthur Johnston (Damski's close friend and benefactor), Rick Garcia, and Laurie Dittman; working under the auspices of the organization Gay and Lesbian Town Meeting, the quartet became widely known as the "Gang of Four." Damski was considered especially influential in securing support for the Human Rights Ordinance from conservative aldermen who had in the past opposed the bill. In 1990, Damski worked to pass Chicago's hate crimes ordinance. In 1991, Damski was inducted into the City of Chicago's Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame for his years of writing and his activism. In 1997, Mayor Richard M. Daley and the City Council presented Damski with a Proclamation for his two decades of service to the city of Chicago and its gay, lesbian and transgendered communities.

Nikolay Przhevalsky (April 12, 1839 - November 1, 1888)

Explorer Nikolai Przhevalsky was one of the most well-known Russian celebrities of the 1870s and ’80s. Whenever he packed his bags for a jaunt across central and far eastern Asia, the Russian explorer invariably brought along a few handsome youths to assist him on his lengthy journeys. The Russian government accommodated him by commissioning his lovers as lieutenants in the army, which provided them with a salary.

Though Przhevalsky usually returned with collections of exotic plants and animals, it was eighteen-year-old Pyotr Kozlov who brought out the beast in the mustachioed voyager. When Przhevalsky died, Kozlov carried on his explorations. Other young men who enjoyed Przhevalsky’s favor were Robert Koecher (b. 1849) and Fyodor Eklon (1857-1883). (Picture: Pyotr Kozlov)

Nikolai Mikhaylovich Przhevalsky (April 12, 1839 - November 1, 1888), was a Russian geographer of Polish background and explorer of Central and Eastern Asia. Although he never reached his final goal, Lhasa in Tibet, he travelled through regions unknown to the west, such as northern Tibet, modern Qinghai and Dzungaria. He significantly contributed to European knowledge on Central Asia and was the first known European to describe the only extant species of wild horse, which is named after him.

Przhevalsky was born in Smolensk into a noble Polish family (the original, Polish name is Przewalski), and studied there and at the military academy in St. Petersburg. In 1864, he became a geography teacher at the military school in Warsaw.

"One of the funniest and most shamelessly entertaining novels around," wrote Now Magazine about Warren Dunford's hilariously off-kilter novel of friendship, artistic ambition, and organized crime. Originally published in Canada to widespread acclaim, Dunford's Soon to Be a Major Motion Picture has finally crossed the border. Stirring elements of screenwriting, thriller fiction, ironic self-examination, and urban street smarts into an oddly invigorating postmodern stew, Dunford's novel drops the reader into the lives of Mitchell Draper, screenwriter/office temp; Ingrid Iversen, painter/coffeehouse manager; and Ramir Martinez, actor/health-food-store clerk as they come face-to-face with their dreams in the last way they expected. Mitchell's sudden and suspicious opportunity to pen the screenplay of a bad "mafia princess" movie for obnoxious film producer Carmen Denver coincides with the opening of a reluctant Ingrid's first exhibit and Ramir's one-man-show. What goes wrong? Lucky for the reader, pretty much everything as mysterious stalkers, threatening phone calls, and old secrets promise to do a lot more than just break up a friendship in what actress Anne Bancroft called "One of the best fun reads of all time!"
"Comic and unexpected ... a far more eloquent meditation on art and dreck than any 5,000-word essay in Harper's. [Dunford] can look forward to a loyal and growing audience."-Paragraph: The Canadian Fiction Review

Rainbow Awards pre-party and 7th anniversary (Day 1)

November 2013 marks the 7th anniversary since I opened my first journal (and yes, I have an itch, but I will scratch it!), on LJ, and the 5th anniversary of the Rainbow Awards. So, of course I decided for a big bash party. 174 authors, all of them in the 2013 Rainbow Awards, have donated or an ebook, or a print book, and I will use them for a Treasure Hunt. Every day, for all November, I will post 6 excerpts (a random page of the book). No reference to title, or author, or publisher. You have to match it with the book ;-) comment on the blog, 1 comment for each matching (you can even try for all 6 books if you like, so 6 chances to win every day). Until the end I will not say which matching is right, so you will have ALL month to try. No limit on how many books you can win, the more you try the better chance you have to win. End of November, among the right matchings, I will draw the winners. So now? let the game start!

End of the month statistics

In the month of August my three online venues, Dreamwidth, Livejournal and my Website totalized 554.631 visits, that means an average of 17.891 visit per day. Considering that for most of October I didn't post at all, the slight negative trend in comparison to September is justified.
