Mark Abramson (born June 25)

Mark Abramson was a Midwestern farm boy who joined the great gay migration to San Francisco in the 1970s. His writing has appeared in the gay press as far back as Christopher Street, Fag Rag, Gay Sunshine, Mouth of the Dragon and more recently in Lethe Press' acclaimed anthology "Charmed Lives, gay spirit in storytelling."

Like his character Tim Snow, Mark Abramson grew up in Minnesota and once worked as a waiter in the Castro, but Mark is better known as a bartender and a co-producer with the late Jim Cvitanich of "MEN BEHIND BARS, the bartenders' folly" an annual AIDS benefit, as well as "PIER PRESSURE" and "HIGH TEA" both mega-dance parties on the piers of San Francisco.
Also like Tim, Mark had an Aunt Ruth Taylor, but Mark's late maternal grandmother wasn't a psychic. His other grandmother might have been, but she died before he was born. And his mother doesn't drink, unfortunately.

In addition to writing the Beach Reading series, he is also editing a memoir, "Castro Street Diaries" recounting true tales from the great gay Mecca before AIDS - including adventures with old friends such as John Preston, Rita Rockett, Randy Shilts and Al Parker.

GayRomLit Retreat: Heidi Belleau

Starting from March up until September I will feature authors attending the GayRomLit Retreat in Chicago (October 16-19, 2014: http://gayromlit.com/grl-authors).

Today author is Heidi Belleau:
Heidi Belleau was born and raised in small town New Brunswick, Canada. She now lives in the rugged oil-patch frontier of Northern BC with her husband, an Irish ex-pat whose long work hours in the trades leave her plenty of quiet time to write. She has a degree in history from Simon Fraser University with a concentration in British and Irish studies; much of her work centered on popular culture, oral folklore, and sexuality, but she was known to perplex her professors with nonironic papers on the historical roots of modern romance novel tropes. (Ask her about Highlanders!) Her writing reflects everything she loves: diverse casts of characters, a sense of history and place, equal parts witty and filthy dialogue, the occasional mythological twist, and most of all, love—in all its weird and wonderful forms. She is the author of the multicultural New Adult series Rear Entrance Video and also co-authors The Flesh Cartel.

This straight-A student has a dirty little secret.

Christian Blake dreams of being a kindergarten teacher, but making the grade means maintaining a squeaky clean image: no drinking, no drugs, no swearing, no sex. And definitely no falling for his new roommate—tattooed bad-boy Max, who may or may not be a drug dealer.

Most of all, it means no working at a porn store. But Christian’s aunt has cancer, and her beloved Rear Entrance Video will go bankrupt if Christian doesn’t take over managerial duties. Soon enough, Christian finds himself juggling sticky twenty-five cent peep show booths, a blackmailing employee, and a demanding professor who likes to make an example of him.

And then there’s Max, who doesn’t know anything about the store, but hates Christian’s preppy sweater vests and the closet Christian forces him into when they’re together. Max just wants Christian to be himself—even though Max is keeping secrets of his own. Christian struggles to find the impossible balance between his real life and the ideal one he thinks a teacher needs to live . . . all while trying to keep his aunt’s dream alive without losing his own.

Crazy from the Heat by Mercy Celeste

The title, Crazy from the Heat, is quite right for the story, cause, more or less, no one in this story is "normal", but they are all out of the ordinary, with a more than troubled past. The story of undercover cop, Paul, passing as a teenager student at the high school where Grey is a teacher is maybe a little far-stretched (32 years old passing for 17), but at least is original, probably more than having a really young cop in the same role. In this way, Paul is even older than Grey, that at 28 years old is a very young teacher, but not impossible. I think the author chose to have Paul older than Grey to avoid the usually pet/teacher scheme, and even if Paul and Grey "play" that game, it's only a game.

There is even another reason, even if it's something the author only hints and doesn't develop much, the submissive nature of Grey. It's downplayed cause Paul isn't your ordinary dominant, and in a way he is more interested in enjoying his time with Grey more than domineering him around, but in any way, the Dom/sub relationship is there.

There is a huge turnaround just at the end, even if, thinking back, the author was giving hint here and there on the final turn. To me it was unexpected, but it was also the logical solution, a big change was needed in Paul and Grey's life to be able for them to find a common path.
