2014 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mentions

Waiting for the list of finalists to be announced beginning of October, I will post daily the 2014 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mentions: an honorable mention means a judge gave a rate of 36 or above out of 40 to the book; an honorable mention doesn't mean the book is automatically among the finalists, could be could be not, but it's important to understand there are more than 500 books in the literary contests, all books are in the process of being read by the jury, but only half of them will go to finals. So please, congratulate with me this year honorable mentions:

Gay Contemporary General Fiction
My Favorite Uncle by Marshall Thornton
Paperback: 312 pages
Publisher: Wilde City Press, LLC (June 25, 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1925180247
ISBN-13: 978-1925180244
Amazon: My Favorite Uncle
Amazon Kindle: My Favorite Uncle

"I enjoyed this book very much. It was a really entertaining read and the author managed to make an extremely, maybe almost over the top, happy ending not feel sickly sweet but to be exactly what I wanted for the characters. Made me smile big time!"

Gay Historical Romance
The Black Orchid by Sawyer Caine
Publisher: Bold Strokes Books (July 13, 2014)
Amazon Kindle: The Black Orchid

"This is a gorgeous, very touching story that had me in tears. The plot develops at a good pace. I did feel that characters were a little rash in their approach to their homosexuality at this period in history, but it was a minor point. The setting is well shown - the trip up the Orinoco was atmospheric and a great setting, very different. The characters are what make this story. Sawyer pulled me to them increasingly throughout... a little, a little more, some more, until finally you're so bound up in them the ending is both sad and rewarding, if that makes any sense. The writing style is pretty flawless. I loved this book. It will stay with me for a long time."

Lesbian Mystery / Thriller
The Little Black Dress by Linda Palund
Paperback: 180 pages
Publisher: Harmony Ink Press (May 15, 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1627988513
ISBN-13: 978-1627988513
Amazon: The Little Black Dress
Amazon Kindle: The Little Black Dress

"A sensitive re-telling of a tragedy that takes a life after two best friends share their coming of age and coming out experiences to and with one another. Beautifully written, compelling characters and a good suspense level. We'll hear more from this author!"

Gay Contemporary Romance
Painting Fire on the Air (A Survivor Story) by J.P. Barnaby
Paperback: 200 pages
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (September 27, 2013)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1627981810
ISBN-13: 978-1627981811
Amazon: Painting Fire on the Air (A Survivor Story)
Amazon Kindle: Painting Fire on the Air (A Survivor Story)

"This was one of the best BDSM books I have ever read.  The writing and character development were excellent.  I was able to connect with the characters in a way I usually cannot with most BDSM romances.  The chemistry, love and affection between Jude and Ben was evident in all aspects of their relationship."

Gay Young Adult
Omorphi by C. Kennedy
Paperback: 480 pages
Publisher: Harmony Ink Press (December 19, 2012)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1627980083
ISBN-13: 978-1627980081
Amazon: Omorphi
Amazon Kindle: Omorphi

"Hauntingly beautiful, a book that you never wanted to end because you were so much a part of the characters lives. When you finish the book you want to know more, to pick up the phone and call Christy. Magically written, the voices and setting of the story were so clear you lived each moment with the characters."

"This book and others like it are the reason I put so much time and effort into judging for the Rainbow Awards. Flawless from start to finish, written with such deft prose that as a reader one cannot help but be pulled deep into the psyche of the characters. I love Christy, Michael, Jake, all their friends and family. Hell, I even love Uncle Smitty. Their world is filled with unspeakable horrors and oceans of pain, but for the chance to sit quietly at their sides on a sunny afternoon, I’d definitely take my chances. Wow."

Gay Contemporary Romance
The Companion by Lloyd A. Meeker
Paperback: 220 pages
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (July 23, 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1627988491
ISBN-13: 978-1627988490
Amazon: The Companion
Amazon Kindle: The Companion

"Surprisingly interesting story for something that the story blurb didn’t make sound fascinating at all. Would have never bought this book if I hadn’t been assigned it. Quite surprisingly good."

"Completely enraptured from beginning to end. I was pulled in from the very beginning, and it was hard to put down."

Gay Paranormal Romance
Wolf Hunter by Ryan Loveless
Publisher: TVB Publishing (October 10, 2013)
Amazon Kindle: Wolf Hunter

"I may be a huge fan of paranormal fan and at times this book was intense... it had me sucked in from the very first page... I will be looking for more of this authors work for sure."

Lesbian Romantic Comedy
Eight Dates: A Romance by Lori L. Lake
Paperback: 250 pages
Publisher: Launch Point Press; 1st edition (July 1, 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1633040003
ISBN-13: 978-1633040007
Amazon: Eight Dates: A Romance
Amazon Kindle: Eight Dates: A Romance

"This book made me laugh out loud more than once. Sky’s eight date challenge, put forth by her best friend Mitchell, was a study in futility. I felt bad for Sky, not because of the horrific dates she had to endure, but because she couldn’t seem to see what was right in front of her. The interactions between Sky and Maya were amazingly done. The only problem I had was the book seemed to end a couple of chapters too soon. I wanted a little more."

Gay Paranormal Romance
Kept Tears by Jana Denardo
Paperback: 210 pages
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (January 27, 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1627983139
ISBN-13: 978-1627983136
Amazon: Kept Tears
Amazon Kindle: Kept Tears

"This was a delight to read! A very enjoyable book and compelling story, great characters one wants to befriend. Even Morcant was played perfectly with his bad boy persona. It flows smoothly from one scene to the next creating a fantasy world I'd like to visit someday (does that make me weird? LOL Maybe, but compared to this world, Denardo's sounds a whole lot better ;-) For a person who is not so much into Urban Fantasy this really hit the spot."

Gay Paranormal Romance
Willing Hands (Wild R Farm 5) by Silvia Violet

Series: Wild R Farm
Paperback: 190 pages
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform; 1 edition (February 8, 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1495326799
ISBN-13: 978-1495326790
Amazon: Willing Hands (Wild R Farm 5)
Amazon Kindle: Willing Hands (Wild R Farm 5)

"This is a well written shifter story that many are sure to love. I like that the author had a character like Will, a bear shifter with a temper, who worries about how his animal reacts to certain situations as opposed to just going with the flow. Although part of a series, it was easy for me to be drawn into this world even though I have not read any of the previous books."

2014 GRL Blog Tour: Tempeste O'Riley

Starting from March up until September I will be part of the 2014 GRL Blog Tour as featured blogger. I will host authors attending the GayRomLit Retreat in Chicago (October 16-19, 2014: gayromlit.com/content/2014-grl-featured-blogger-program). To my guests, I asked to brainstorm around the common theme "inspiration". Today author is Tempeste O'Riley:

Good morning all! As some of you know, I’m a Supporting Author going to GayRomLit 2014 in Chicago! (This will be my first convention YAY!) However, today I’d like to talk to you about what inspires me when I’m writing. What pushes me to write the stories I do.

When I wrote my first m/m romance, it was as a push from a friend in reaction to how I often am treated when I go out—I hate shopping due to the attitudes of others about my mobility. You see, I don’t “look sick” whatever that means, so I’m often harassed at Wal-Mart, the grocery store, etc. for using the little electric shopping carts and more. A friend said I should write a story where the MC had mobility issues like mine and then give that character a happy ending.

LOL, yep, that was the entire basis of me writing, giving characters the love and acceptance I wanted. You see, I’m also now single and have had my mobility used against me on that front too, so it made sense, her suggestion. Mind you, I really don’t think she expected me to write a sensual Dom and an abuse victim falling in love ;) but that’s who came to me.

I’m not the kind of author that can plan out, outline, and pre-plot all the lovely things in a story. Nope, I’m a totally character driven author, so on top of bossy characters dictating their stories to me, everything from the news, to stories my friends tell me of their lives or pasts, to simple random thoughts influence my writing and spurn me to write more. I love sharing hope, love, and joy, even if it is only between the pages of my books.

So what is my inspiration? Life!

Temptations of Desire by Tempeste O’Riley
Paperback: 200 pages
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (September 22, 2014)

Desires Entwined: Book Three

Alexander James Noble is a gender fluid gay man who gave up on finding Mister Right a long time ago. He’s not asking for much, though. He just wants a guy who loves all of him and appreciates his feminine form too.

At the local LGBTQ center where Alex regularly volunteers, he meets Dal Sayer, an officer of the Milwaukee PD. Because he’s been rejected one too many times, Alex doesn’t trust the huge cop and the interest he shows in him, but once Dal sets his mind on something, he goes all out. Pushing aside his preconceived notions, Alex opens up just a little and soon caves.

From their first date—while dealing with his father’s failing health and his parents’ demands for him to settle down and have children—Dal never takes his eyes off his goal of making Alex his. But proving to Alex he isn’t like all the men who couldn’t see him for who he truly was and only wanted to hide him away is harder than he thought.

Gay Erotic Romance
Trusting Thomas (Collars & Cuffs) by K.C. Wells

Series: Collars & Cuffs
Paperback: 282 pages
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (October 7, 2013)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1627983287
ISBN-13: 978-1627983280
Amazon: Trusting Thomas (Collars & Cuffs)
Amazon Kindle: Trusting Thomas (Collars & Cuffs)

"Beautifully written alternating between potential heartbreak and joy. I found myself rooting for this couple almost from the moment they met. I love that although one is an obvious victim that needed healing their relationship actually lends to them both healing."

"I am not one for BDSM, but this series is wonderful!!! The 2nd in a series, one does not have to read the first one to fully enjoy this one. An abused sub who knows too much, and is so in need of love & knowledge...a lonely Dom who isn't looking for permanence but is willing to help with rescue & healing...it is an enlightening & wonderful pairing!"

Gay Biography / Memoir
Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East by Benjamin Law
Paperback: 288 pages
Publisher: Cleis Press (May 13, 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 162778036X
ISBN-13: 978-1627780360
Amazon : Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East
Amazon Kindle: Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East

"Gaysia is skillfully written, has quite a bit of humor along the way, and gives the reader a glimpse into what it means to be gay in China, Japan, Malaysia, and other Asian countries. (Some chapters are more interesting than others, but I’d give the writer high marks for tackling a difficult subject in a unique way.) Enjoyable read if a bit repetitious."

"Read it. Admire it. Would give it full marks. I very much appreciate Mr. Law is NOT a predator but a serious, sensitive journalist. I say BRAVO!"

"For anyone interested in the Asian LGBT culture this books is a must. I've read some people refer to it as a travelog and funny. Well, in a way, yes, it's a good travelog but to me, been that I've never been interested to visit that part of the country, it's more of an informational book, something that should be learned in school. The stories held within its pages are at times funny, or at least it makes you laugh a couple of times, but the rest? The rest, in my opinion is simply somber. The irresponsibility of the governments in most of the countries depicted here is immense! It really hurt me to learn how many people died of AIDS because there is no information given to the populace. People would get sick and didn't know what was happening to them, a lot didn't even know what a condom was, they'd never seeing one. All in all, this is a great book and should be read by anyone who is interested in Asia or planning to visit and want to know about the LGBT Culture there."

Gay Visual Arts & Photography
Beards, an Unshaved History by Kevin Clarke

Language: English, German
ISBN-10: 3867876347
ISBN-13: 978-3867876346
Amazon : Beards, an Unshaved History

"I love books like this. I actually collect them and the visual effect just kept me drawn to each page. I loved reading all the information. I know some people might find it boring, but I don’t. It also helps that I love men with beards... so for me this is like a coffee table book: one I’d have on display all the time."

"For those who love looking, caressing, kissing a bear, this books is perfect. I gave it top rate because it's a well put together coffee table book and I know there are so many out there who'd love to entertain themselves browsing through the pages. As far as myself? I'd rather caress a smooth face. Some chest hair don't bother me and maybe a little facial as well but not the bushy, full grown beard. Overall, this is a good book and quite informative. Mr. Clarke selected a very good array of models most of whom I find quite attractive."

"It feels like this story is a beautiful Greek tragedy. Sage suffered so much and he didn’t do anything to  deserve it. He served time for a crime he didn’t commit, but still, his heart is open to love. This book is awesome."

"While you knew early on that the couple would eventually overcome family obstacles and history to be together, their journey was very enjoyable to read."

Gay Poetry
Souvenir Boys by David-Matthew Barnes
Publisher: Pindelion Publishing; First edition (December 2, 2013)
Amazon Kindle: Souvenir Boys

"So evocative and visceral. Rich and intense. I am there - in each short world."

"Each poem in this collection is a wonderfully told gem that glistens in its own right. From unrequited love to seduction, lust, desire, and obsession, the author runs the gamut of emotions with a deft writing style. 5 Big Stars."

A Thing of Beauty by Jake Jaxson & RJ Sebastian
Hardcover: 128 pages
Publisher: Bruno Gmunder Group (April 1, 2014)

ISBN-13: 978-3867876629
Amazon : A Thing of Beauty

"It is visually stunning. I enjoyed the writing, in between the photos as well. "

"Wow. Just wow. Beautiful doesn’t even begin to touch this book. Yeah. I think I need a hardcopy. Because I want that piece of art sitting on my living room coffee table to spark conversation. I always love it when people knock down walls and unleash creativity. Bravo, CockyBoys, bravo. This was utterly breathtaking. And the pictures only added to the delight I felt reading the words of this story. Or maybe the words added to the richly textured beauty of the pictures."

Gay Young Adult
You're Always in the Last Place You Look by T.N. Gates
Publisher: T.O.S.O.L Books (August 31, 2014)
Amazon Kindle: You're Always in the Last Place You Look

"This book totally had me sucked in from the moment I started reading it... I didn’t even mind that it was weirdly formatted... Definitely going to be reading this one again and seeing what else the Author has out...AWESOME!"

"Really good YA novel. Both MCs are well developed, and intriguing, going past stereotypes and showing how important it is to look beyond the apparent surface to the person beneath. This book is a brilliant YA novel as it teaches tolerance and openness to new ideas."

Gay Young Adult
Silent by Sara Alva
Paperback: 382 pages
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (December 2, 2013)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1493665901
ISBN-13: 978-1493665907
Amazon : Silent
Amazon Kindle: Silent

"I found this young adult book engrossing. Sara Alva is a consummate writer. She developed the main characters so well. At first I found myself responding to Alex's "mask," and didn't like him much. But it was just that, a mask. Once Sara showed us the real Alex, bit by bit, I was on his side, and by the end I felt as desperate as he did for his Seb. Sebastian was interesting - a real challenge to look beyond the surface with people judged "special." I loved Sara's positive spin on the social workers. So often they're maligned, but here she shows a group of people who work to help others with little reward - certainly financially, and only the hope of reward personally, as many people they encounter have negative views of them and what they do. Sara's writing style, to me, is flawless. Overall I could find nothing to take a point from. This book, for its genre and as a whole, is flawless."

"The descriptions of Los Angeles and the characters are very vivid. The author brings to life what it means to experience real poverty and limited choices, what it is like to have no hope. The author deftly pulls you into the story and the lives of the characters."

"This was a down-to-earth, fun-and-easy book that tells it like it is. Not only chock full of anecdotes and antidotes, it also has a lot of practical exercises guaranteed to get honest communication flowing. Though it’s written for Lesbian marriages, the advice would be excellent for all marriages."

"OMG!! I never thought a self-help book would be able to make me laugh so hard, move me to tears, and get my motor reved with the idea of putting some of its tips into practice. Well played, Kim Chernin & Renate Stendhal, well played!"

"Truly a top author in this genre. This novel had all the right elements plus it had a huge heart - emotional without being melodramatic - a keeper I will read again - my only complaint is I needed it to be longer."

"Well developed storyline, hilarious dialogue in spots.  The author writes about what she knows!"

"Over and over I kept hearing the long slow sweep of the wind across the prairie. I am sure I was standing next to Gustie when she looked out toward the horizon on the day of Dorcas Many Road’s death, straining her eyes for a glimpse of the buffalo spirit as Jimmy Saul danced to the ancestor drums. For all its many pages this story was spare as sparrows wing, long on the haunting melody of unutterable feeling and overflowing with the painful tales carried in the silences between words. It was a gift and a privilege to read this story. I am honored."

Gay Visual Arts & Photography
Men & Gods by David Vance

"Predominantly visual – the images themselves tell the stories of, as the title says, Men and Gods."

Gay Mystery / Thriller
Home The Hard Way by Z.A. Maxfield
Paperback: 328 pages
Publisher: Riptide Publishing (July 14, 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1626491461
ISBN-13: 978-1626491465
Amazon: Home The Hard Way
Amazon Kindle: Home The Hard Way

"An incredibly absorbing novel. ZA peels back the layers of the plot masterfully, building suspense. By doing so, she develops her characters equally well. I liked both MCs, especially Finn, and found myself enjoying the BDSM interaction between them more than I usually would with such scenes. I enjoyed this a lot. The final showdown was excellent. She did not pad out the plot with sex, but used it to build on her characterization and introduced it at appropriate points, not as padding for a thin plot."

"This author that never fails to deliver. Mystery in everyday life: just look closely in your past if you dare. "

Gay Historical Romance
Forever Hold His Peace by Rebecca Cohen
Paperback: 200 pages
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (June 16, 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1627987703
ISBN-13: 978-1627987707

Amazon Kindle: Forever Hold His Peace

"I read and loved the previous two books in the series and was positively delighted to be handed the third."

Gay Anthology / Paranormal Romance
Secrets of Neverwood: One Door Closes\The Growing Season\The Lost Year by G.B. Lindsey, Diana Copland & Libby Drew
Publisher: Carina Press (June 30, 2014)
Amazon Kindle: Secrets of Neverwood: One Door Closes\The Growing Season\The Lost Year

"Each foster brother has their own demons to deal with from their past before finding happiness in their present. Along with that there is the underhanded goings on of the real estate agent who wants to get his hands on the rambling old house - Neverwood - and land the foster brothers have inherited from their foster mother. Full, well rounded characters who are not perfect studs. Their issues are gradually revealed so that first impressions (from the reader) are not who these men really are. Also, I will include the rambling house that has given shelter to these men as troubled foster children and seems to begin to breath again through the pages of the stories as it is being renovated. Each author has a slightly different style but the stories flow beautifully into one another and the reader is transported into the world of Neverwood by gorgeous, elegiac text. The house and the local town where richly described and, by the end, I felt as though I knew every knook and cranny."

"Amazing book. The characters were well fleshed out and the story line kept me interested. Some of the most well written scenes I've read in quite some time."

Gay Contemporary Romance
Artist's Touch by Kerry Adrienne
Publisher: Ellora's Cave Publishing Inc (February 26, 2014)
Amazon Kindle: Artist's Touch

"I love when I am reading a book for judging that I might not normally buy on my own and it ends up being something I cannot put down. Wonderfully written, had me rooting for the couple from the moment they were first introduced to one another."

Gay Historical
The Gentleman’s Madness by Bonnie Dee & Summer Devon
Publisher: Samhain Publishing, Ltd. (December 31, 2013)
Amazon Kindle: The Gentleman’s Madness

"I really enjoyed this story about hope even in the most heartbreaking of circumstances, of love being able to find one even when the world says it's wrong or even when they feel incarcerated or hampered by their surroundings. The characters of John Gilliam and Sam Tully were both like a pair of sweet onions, capable of making the reader cry as they pulled back more layers and learned more about them, cutting and delving into their inner souls, but also with a hint of sweet with the bitter and definitely capable of adding flavor to any meal... Or in this case, story. And even though I'm allergic to onions I wouldn't mind a second helping of both of them. The plot had elements that I've read before, but with a much brighter slant to it. I enjoyed... no, I loved the writing style of the authors that breathed life into this book, that gave this gut-wrenching story of survival, triumph, and love indeed conquering all, legs so that it could walk. The setting was wondrously described."
