Life’s Beautiful Accidents
Sometimes stories come to us when we are least expecting them. Sort of like life, love, the flu, and maybe even the lottery, LOL I can hope!
My 1Night Stand stories from Decadent Publishing were one of those nicer accidents. My BWFF—best writer friend forever—Wendy Burke and I were sitting around one day chatting about characters, books and all that other crazy hoopla writers talk about when we get together.
Well, in amidst her telling me the opening line of a book she had no idea where to go with—“I wanna get drunk, get fucked and not give a damn”—and me saying I wanted to write a May/December (older and younger man) we decided to make our main characters brother and sister.
Why the heck not?
BEAR IT ALL and THE ONE HE CHOSE were born.
As I was reading her rough draft, I fell in love with Martin, the concierge, so I asked Wendy, “Can I have him for a story?” She was like, “Sure.”
Enter ACCIDENTALLY BEAUTIFUL.
Wendy had this great Scottish tale she’d never finished and I suggested—brow-beating just sounds so ugly—that she take the good parts and work it into a 1NS. We decided her hero Ian and Martin must have been high school friends back in Scotland.
Then the fourth book in our little plan, HASTE YE BACK came to life.
And you know what? Brin from HASTE YE BACK lives next door to my sweet nerd Jason from THE BEST EVER and his sister is the rubenesque heroine of FOR ME.
Did Wendy and I set out to write six interconnected stories? Especially when we write in totally different romance genres? I mean, who woulda thought a gay romance author and a straight romance author would ever link their books? Well I’m glad that we did because they are some of my favorite books I’ve ever written. And it has developed into a beautiful working relationship and a real friendship for me and her. Funny thing, I even had a reader think we were the same person for a while.
Was all this an accident? Fate? Divine intervention?
All I do know is that sometimes the most beautiful things in our life happen to us by accident. Chance meetings, strange friendships, wonderful events.
It reminds of the DOCTOR WHO episode “Turn Left” where one of the Doctor’s companions, Donna, made the seemingly innocent decision to turn a different direction at an intersection. Her whole life changed because of that one decision as well as the fate of the world.
Now I don’t think that the end of the universe via a Dalek invasion will happen because I turned right instead of left, but when I sit back and think about how I met the people I love the most, it surprises me how easily one tiny decision might have made me miss out on having them in my life.
What if my boss hadn’t changed my work schedule? Would I have met and fallen in love with my husband?
What if I hadn’t just given a friend a manicure, would my sista-from-a-different-mutha seen her nails and asked for my business card?
If I hadn’t opened my beauty salon, would fate have put me in line with some of my most cherished friends?
What if I had bailed on that graduation party, would I have missed out on one of the best friends I’ve ever had?
What if … if… if… if!!!
Sometimes we shouldn’t question the Cosmos, rather, just be grateful we DID turn left, the universe DIDN’T end and our life became richer than we ever thought possible.
My book ACCIDENTALLY BEAUTIFUL embraces that belief and flirts with the idea that perhaps none of these beautiful things are an accident.
Is it God, the Devil, Fate, a Time Lord, Coincidence?
Maybe it’s just Madame Eve…..

Martin Baird is perfectly content in his safe, predictable job as head concierge for Castillo Resorts, but when a handsome stranger whisks him away for a night of tropical escapades—first visiting an isolated gay bar then to a secluded beach where erotic delights await—Martin’s world is thrown upside down. He’s never met a man like Garret Fisher, but it seems he has been waiting for a night like this all his life.
Could something truly beautiful come out of this accidental meeting? Or was it really not an accident at all?
Martin’s attention once again centered on the man behind the bar. A dark haired man with a dominant glint in his sexy, green eyes Martin couldn’t help but be affected by. Heart racing, an unexplained veneration overcame him. Never before had someone bewitched him so effortlessly, rousing his blood with a single look. And they had plans for the evening? He should ask what they were, but he assumed Garret would tell him—eventually.
Even if he didn’t, Martin would go.
I’ve lost my bleeding mind.
Perhaps there was an ancient fairy knoll in Grand Turk, like the ones Da wove tales about, where babies were swapped for changelings and the spirits of the Fae bent people to their will. Surely a mystical influence reigned, leading Martin to follow this Garret on a mysterious journey.
Bloody hell, I almost called him “sir” and we haven’t even been properly introduced!
On cue, Garret extended a hand and Martin took it. That hand wrapped around his, similar in size, but worn and rough. Electric sensations ran through his blood at the lightly calloused fingers. This man did not sit around being idle.
“Nice to meet you, Marty.”
He should correct him—he hated being called Marty—but Garret had not let go, his playful gaze rendering him unable to assert himself. He swallowed hard, envisioning those palms running over his body with deep appreciation, stroking his budding erection, caressing his ass, parting him…spanking him?
He dropped Garret’s hand at once, cheeks reddening.
Grinning, Garret returned to making the drink, his cocky demeanor a solid indicator he knew where Martin’s thoughts had wandered.
Damn Jagger for putting those ideas into his head—and awakening ones he’d not entertained in a long time.
Then again, maybe Garret Fischer held all the blame.
When Garret presented the cocktail—an illicit-looking, frothy, white concoction which again had Martin’s mind going to places it shouldn’t—he placed both arms wide on the bar, waiting for a reaction.
“Slainte.” Martin raised the drink to his lips, and the creamy, sweet beverage went down smooth. The alcohol warmed his blood but the intense way Garret studied him brought him to a full boil.
He placed the glass down, hand shaking. “Quite good. Not too sweet, either.”
“Glad you like it, Marty.” Garret leaned forward. “Here. You have something….”
Before Martin saw it coming, a masculine thumb brushed across his lower lip.
A visceral reaction shot molten fire through his center and he gasped. When Garret slipped that thumb between supple lips to suck away any residue of alcohol, Martin swore his cock grew two inches.
Garret pulled his thumb out of his mouth ever so slowly, purposefully. His green eyes, full of wicked promise behind those glasses, never left Martin’s. “Delicious.”
Throat dry, he wanted to ask if Garret liked how he tasted, wanted to taste more. But the notion of a different sort of whiteness dribbling down Martin’s chin, and Garret licking it clean, made him bloody incoherent.
“We’ll meet at the main entrance at eight.” Garret’s casual tone brooked no disobedience.
He nodded at once. “Um…right. Okay.”
Deanna Wadsworth might be a bestselling erotica author, but she leads a pretty vanilla life in Ohio with her wonderful husband and a couple adorable cocker spaniels. She has been spinning tales and penning stories since childhood, and her first erotic novella was published in 2010. When she isn’t writing books or brainstorming with friends, you can find her making people gorgeous in a beauty salon. She loves music and dancing, and can often be seen hanging out on the sandbar in the muddy Maumee River or chilling with her hubby and a cocktail in their basement bar. In between all that fun, Deanna cherishes the quiet times when she can let her wildly active imagination have the full run of her mind. Her fascination with people and the interworkings of their relationships have always inspired her to write romance with spice and love without boundaries.
