Sylvia Townsend Warner (December 6, 1893 – May 1, 1978)

Valentine Ackland was an English poet, an important figure in the emergence of modernism in 20th century British poetry. In 1925 at the age of 19, she married Richard Turpin, a homosexual who was unable to consummate their marriage. In less than a year, she had her marriage to Turpin annulled and never returned to a serious relationship with a man. Sylvia Townsend Warner was an English novelist and poet. Warner was friendly with a number of the "Bright Young People" of the 1920s. In 1923, she met T. F. Powys, whose writing influenced her own and whose work she in turn encouraged. It was at Powys' home that Warner, in 1930, first met Valentine Ackland; the two women fell in love and settled at Frome Vauchurch, Dorset. They had a lifelong relationship, albeit tumultuous at times given Ackland's increasing alcoholism and infidelities. Warner was 12 years older than Ackland, and the two lived together until Ackland’s death from breast cancer in 1969. Selected letters between the two have been published: Wendy Mulford edited This Narrow Place in 1988, and ten years later Susanna Pinney published another selection, Jealousy in Connecticut. They are buried together at St Nicholas Churchyard, Chaldon Herring, Dorset, England.
