Never judge a sexy man by his cover.
Detective Beau Williams is hard-working, dedicated, and professional. He enjoys the finer things in life, but with his heavy caseload that includes what Beau suspects is a new serial killer, he has no time to enjoy much of anything. What the tall redhead needs is someone to shake him up a little.
Investigative Technician Austin Kent never met a snarky joke he didn’t like - or a set of stairs that couldn’t trip him up. One night after a devastating episode at work, Austin sees something else he likes - the handsome detective he’s seen around the station whom he’s always wondered about. But after he makes a drunken fool of himself in front of Detective Williams, he’s sure there’s no hope.
Beau and Austin’s worlds collide right away when Austin is sent to pick up some evidence at the station. Amidst a myriad of twists and turns in the troubling serial killer style murders of Vegas conventioneers, Austin and Beau discover that there’s more to the other than they’d originally thought. There might even be more they’d like to give – unless the killer has the final say.

The café was nice and cool. Austin rarely went there—only when he was in the area for something relating to his job. So far, he’d never had to actually serve a subpoena to anyone in the coffee shop, so in his mind that meant he could still patronize the place. After strolling through the café doors, he’d accidentally kicked one of the wood chairs, scraping it loudly over the polished wood floor, catching himself before he went down. He was currently staring at the chocolate croissants, trying to talk himself out of getting the remaining three.
One for Beau. Two for me.
There was still so much to learn about his lover slash maybe boyfriend. Beau had gotten a vanilla latte at the Starbucks in Tonopah and a pineapple shake at the Sonic. But he’d wanted a mocha cappuccino when they’d been at Parker and Lonnie’s place the night before. Did that mean he would or wouldn’t like the chocolate croissant?
This relationship stuff is hard.
“Can I help you, sir?”
A petite girl who looked to be no older than twelve smiled up at him. He was pretty sure that she wasn’t actually twelve. It was more likely a case of everyone appearing as if they were prepubescent the older he got.
“Let me nab the rest of those croissants for now. I’m waiting ‘til my friend gets here before I order any coffee.”
Once he’d paid for the bag of pastries, he glanced around the mildly busy room. Most of the seating was hardwood chairs, one of the things about the place he didn’t care for. On the far end there were a couple of large cushioned chairs surrounding a low table. Only one was occupied and the man sitting there with his tablet gave the impression he was readying to leave. Austin’s phone buzzed.
He set the croissants on the counter so he could answer. “Hey, babe.”
“Austin, I’m so sorry.”
His stomach twisted. He reminded himself not to get weird—Beau had a lot of shit going on. “What’s up?”
“The Director thought our meeting was at two-thirty. I’m gonna have to hang around here. I’m afraid I won’t have time to come meet with you. I told the guys I’d see them in the task force room at three.”
“Don’t apologize, babe, seriously. I know what you’re up against.” Austin glanced down at the pastries he’d bought. “Hey. Do you like chocolate croissants?”
He heard what could’ve been a small snort on the other line. “Yes. Why?”
“I have a bag of them here I already bought. I’ll bring ‘em by real quick. I’m just down the street. You want me to bring a cup of coffee too?”
“You’re going to spoil me if you’re not careful.”
Beau’s voice had almost been sultry. That was all it took for Austin to get hard. Especially since Beau had said so many truly filthy things to him in the previous week.
“Was that a yes?”
Beau chuckled. “It was a yes.”
